The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has given the green light for second-semester registrations at seven universities, a move that has been hailed as crucial for validating the scheme's mandate. This decision comes amidst concerns over the scheme's financial obligations to these institutions, with NSFAS owing a total of R730.3 million to Unisa and the six universities of technology. The administrator, Professor Hlengani Mathebula, emphasized the importance of swift action in resolving registration uncertainties, which could have had destabilizing effects on the sector. This includes new registrations for 26,159 students and top-up registrations for 79,118 students across Unisa and the six universities of technology. The institutions in question are the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Vaal University of Technology, Central University of Technology (CUT), and Tshwane University of Technology. Professor Puleng LenkaBula, Unisa's vice-chancellor, expressed concerns about the continued uncertainty surrounding outstanding payments, which could have significant consequences for the large and vulnerable student population. The R405.8 million owed by NSFAS to Unisa includes new student registrations, second-semester registration top-ups, July allowance releases, and allowance payments to cover NSFAS shortfalls. Unisa had recommended a minimum allocation of R600 million to support the 2026 second-semester registration cycle, highlighting the financial strain on these institutions.
